What it’s about
HE CAN GUARD HER
Lady Phoebe Batten is pretty, vivacious, and yearning for a social life befitting the sister of a powerful duke. But because she is almost completely blind, her overprotective brother insists that she have an armed bodyguard by her side at all times-the very irritating Captain Trevillion.
FROM EVERY DANGER
Captain James Trevillion is proud, brooding, and cursed with a leg injury from his service in the King’s dragoons. Yet he can still shoot and ride like the devil, so watching over the distracting Lady Phoebe should be no problem at all-until she’s targeted by kidnappers.
BUT PASSION ITSELF
Caught in a deadly web of deceit, James must risk life and limb to save his charge from the lowest of cads-one who would force Lady Phoebe into a loveless marriage. But while they’re confined to close quarters for her safekeeping, Phoebe begins to see the tender man beneath the soldier’s hard exterior . . . and the possibility of a life-and love-she never imagined possible.
Dearest Rogue was a breath of fresh air. It was exactly the book I needed and it landed into my hands in a moment when I had no idea what I wanted to read. I have been on a contemporary/new adult kick for quite some time, and I didn’t realize how much I needed a change of genre until I read this book!
This book has rejuvenated my love for this series. In my opinion, the past few books have started to drag, and I was even questioning whether or not I would read this book. When I learned that Phoebe would be featured in Dearest Rogue I quickly changed my mind! I have been eager to read Phoebe’s story since we first met her back in Notorious Pleasures, (book 2 of the Maiden Lane series.) She was just a girl back then, but now has finally grown into a beautiful woman who is worthy of a fabulous Happily Ever After. Phoebe certainly gets her HEA, and then some! The fabulous Captain James Trevillion is brilliantly paired with this lovely young woman, and the sparks fly between them.
Phoebe is the youngest sister of the powerful Duke of Wakefield. She is completely blind and has been sheltered and protected her entire life. The Duke insists that she have a bodyguard to protect her, and who better than the injured James Trevillion who is a trained soldier.
What captured my attention and made me cheer for this couple is how opposite they appear to be. Phoebe is optimistic, naïve, and kind. James is pessimistic, world-weary, cynical, and hardened. Although seemingly mismatched, Hoyt wisely paired these characters and made the unlikely seem destined. They compliment one another in such fundamental ways that it’s a wonder they ever function with one another.
I am sucker for bodyguard books, and this is an amazing one. Phoebe’s life is put in danger and James’s entire shifts to protecting her and keeping her safe. Watching James fall in love with Phoebe was such a treat, and surprisingly, the steam in this book is dialed up another entire notch.
This was a quick read, an amazing love story, and a suspenseful read that kept me interested and engaged the entire time. I loved it and will count it as one of my favorite books in this series!
