Rhage and Mary return in a new novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, a series “so popular, I don’t think there’s a reader today who hasn’t at least heard of [it]” (USA Today).
Nothing is as it used to be for the Black Dagger Brotherhood. After avoiding war with the Shadows, alliances have shifted and lines have been drawn. The slayers of the Lessening Society are stronger than ever, preying on human weakness to acquire more money, more weapons, more power. But as the Brotherhood readies for an all-out attack on them, one of their own fights a battle within himself…
For Rhage, the Brother with the biggest appetites, but also the biggest heart, life was supposed to be perfect—or at the very least, perfectly enjoyable. Mary, his beloved shellan, is by his side and his King and his brothers are thriving. But Rhage can’t understand—or control—the panic and insecurity that plague him…
And that terrifies him—as well as distances him from his mate. After suffering mortal injury in battle, Rhage must reassess his priorities—and the answer, when it comes to him, rocks his world...and Mary’s. But Mary is on a journey of her own, one that will either bring them closer together or cause a split that neither will recover from...
dorsey’s speculates about The Beast
Within the Brotherhood Rhage is the vampire with the strongest appetites. He’s the best fighter, the quickest to act on his impulses, he’s owned by this dark side, and when Rhage’s dragon is unleashed he is a danger to everyone around him.
I absolutely love and adore Rhage, he’s just so much fun!! He is one of the most dangerous and formidable of the Brothers. His Beast is his curse, yet it’s the one thing that can make a difference for the Brotherhood in battle. I’m absolutely certain if given the choice he would keep his beastly curse if it means keeping his Brothers and their Shellans safe, not that he’s been given the choice, but that’s just the type of male Rhage is. As a matter of fact, he chooses to keep his Beast in exchange for keeping his “Mary Girl”.
We know from The Shadows that Rhage is having a hard time coming to terms with the deaths of Wellsie and Salina. He feels deep for his brothers and although Trez is not a true Brother”, they have taken him and I’am within Brotherhood fold. He is suffering a sort of PTSD and questioning why his “Mary Girl”, Doc Jane, and Autumn were spared death…not that he would do anything to change that, he loves Mary with all of his heart and soul…she is his heart and soul!!
So we know that Rhage is battling and trying to come to terms with this issue, another issue is that he and Mary would love to have children but because Mary is not human, not to mention her health issues before she became immortal, it’s an impossible dream to have a child naturally. I believe that they will adopt a child or children when the female vampire at Safe Place that Mary cares for eventually dies….not because they can’t save her but rather she is choosing to die, this is all speculation (and hope) on my part.
Rhage and Mary have a bumpy road ahead of them but I have faith that J.R. Ward will take us in a direction that will heal Rhage and give him and his “Mary Girl” what they desperately desire (fingers crossed!!).
Favorite quotes from Lover Eternal:
- “Being with Mary was different because…he wasn’t the only one who wanted to make love to her. The Beast wanted her, too. The beast wanted out so it could take her.”
- His voice was like sandpaper. “I need to tell you something. “I’m a vampire. I’m a warrior. I’m a dangerous beast. At the end of this evening, you aren’t going to remember you ever met me. And the idea of not even being a memory of yours makes me feel like I’ve been stabbed in the chest.
- “I mean, come on. He’s kind of cute, in a Godzilla sort of way.”
