What it’s about
When Killian MacGregor, the hottest quarterback in the NFL, eyes the perfect pair of female legs, he spends an hour tracking the gorgeous woman in a room filled with rowdy teammates until one gets out of line.
Rebecca Cavanaugh, a long distance runner for the state team, intimidates boys and men with her quick wit and majestic height. The pre-season jock party isn’t her scene, but she’s roped into attending to provide her sister a sober ride home.
Hiding in the kitchen to avoid the athletic sex fest, a drunken thug forces Rebecca to her knees, and waves a giant ding-dong in her face. Before Rebecca can extricate herself from the hairy situation, an unknown champion saves the night. When Killian assists Rebecca off the floor, she’s stunned into silence while staring at the sexiest man alive.
Will Killian’s bad boy rep and Rebecca’s need for commitment, make this the most impossible “Play” of the season? Or, will Killian’s haunting past and need for victory destroy the most important game of his life?
4 Stars! A pleasant surprise!
As I started to read I thought…here we go again, this is going to be all about the sex…and yes there certainly was plenty of it, but much to my delight there was a substantial amount of depth to the characters and the story. Not only that, but I found the sexual encounters layered with a good dose of feeling and passion, not just robotic meaningless filler.
Both Rebecca and Killian are struggling with personal issues that defines who they are, and while Rebecca’s cause her to withdraw, Killian’s brings his anger to the surface and it’s not pretty. He doesn’t physically hurt people, but subjects those he loves to emotional torture. However, once you find out the underlying reason, while not quite acceptable, it was understandable to a a certain extent. Killian could be a real ass, but at the same time you wanted to wrap him in love until the hurt inside him subsided. Rebecca tolerated his behavior to a point, and did her best to play it his way for a while. She knew for them to have any kind of a future he needed to think about the way he reacted and make some big changes in his behavior when things didn’t go his way. Killian might have some issues, but he’s also utterly adorable and when he’s not in a funk, the boy shines! The sweet, sexy stuff that comes out of his mouth, made my heart go pitter-patter! He doesn’t just have game on the field, he scores some major points in the bedroom…the kitchen…the shower…the lawn…I think you get the picture and it’s a HOT one!
Their journey was a heartbreaking struggle at times, but also filled with incredible joy when they allowed themselves to just be and live in the moment and relish all the good in their lives! I found myself immersed in a story that had me pulling for these characters, because they deserved to be together. One was no good without the other, they were two halves of whole and just needed to get to that pivotal point in their lives, mostly Killian, when they realized what they could lose and grab on to forever. Killian needed to accept that you can’t change the past, sometimes life hands you a crappy deal and you need to move forward no matter how much it hurts.
Without giving too much away there is a character that is introduced that will absolutely break your heart, then grab on and won’t let go. You will fall in love! This character is key in setting Killian free. There is a beautiful, fitting feel good ending too!
For a book that I didn’t think I was going to care for it turned out to be quite the page turner, and I couldn’t believe how quickly I became attached to the characters and invested in the story. I enjoyed it so much that I’m diving into the next book in the series, Strike, and hoping the author works her magic on me again!
