The first book in the Swordcross Knights: A series of full-length historical romance novels set in the vivid and beguiling world of medieval Britannia.
Get lost in the world of medieval England in Elizabeth Cole’s Honor & Roses!
Originally drawn in by the beautiful cover, Elizabeth Cole quickly managed to transport me to another time and place. Honor & Roses starts off at a point when our heroine, Lady Cecily de Vere, is still quite young but there is already a strong bond between her and Alric of Hawksmere, one of her uncle’s trained knights. Not much older than Cecily, Alric leaves to fight in the war. When they meet again years later, the connection they once shared flares up again but Alric is below Cecily’s station and she is to be wed to another lord soon.
Around Cecily and Alric’s romance, there is an interesting plot concerning Cecily’s husband-to-be and Rafe, Alric’s friend. The book starts off at a slow pace to set up the story but quickly picks up with twists and turns I did not expect. The many secondary characters are very well depicted and made me become attached to them quickly. I very much hope Elizabeth Cole will continue the Swordcross Knights series with Luc and Rafe, but I would also love to know more about Octavio and Robin. I appreciated that the author kept an appropriate amount of authenticity, also in the language of the book, while still making it easy and quick to read.
A great start to a new series, Elizabeth Cole created a beautiful world with Honor & Roses. A well-crafted story of intrigue, political machinations, love, romance, friendship and trust, I highly recommend it to all historical romance lovers.
