Far too young, Apollo Ulfr lost Ilsa, his wife, the love of his life and the mother of his two children. The grief of her loss does not settle in his soul, it solders to it. But when he discovers there is a parallel universe where his wife may have a twin, he feels there's hope and sets about bringing her to his world so he can have her back.
But Ilsa Ulfr of our world is married to the parallel universe's twin, Pol, who is not a good man. Not in any way. She's on the run from him and the last thing she wants is to be transported to a fantastical world and be forced to take his side as his wife, even if he is not Pol. And Apollo finds the broken Ilsa nothing like his beloved, and further, wants nothing to do with her.But darkness is looming and evil is amassing. Apollo must protect his land and keep his family safe, including the new Ilsa.
5 Fantastical Stars!!!
We finally get Apollo’s book and KA does not disappoint!! While the other books in the series are amazing, KA took this to another level…I’ve never read anything like it and it is so UNIQUE!! The action starts from the first page, grabs hold of the reader….AND DOES NOT LET GO!!
Apollo travels to our world to rescue his deceased wife’s twin from her abusive husband, Pol, who also happens to be Apollo’s twin in our world. Ilsa of our world, has led a very sad lonely life, which becomes increasingly more difficult, while the Ilsa of the parallel world, had a beautiful, but short fulfilling life. She was doted on by her parents and by Apollo, who loved her tremendously and he has yet to recover from her death. This leads him to seek her twin of our world, even knowing the life she has led.
Ilsa of our world was naturally freaked out (as most of the heroines have been) being transported to a parallel world, and equally freaked at the thought that there was another Apollo. Ilsa was a damaged woman due to her upbringing which led her to making a colossal mistake by marrying the wrong man for the wrong reasons. Apollo can offer her the life she so desperately wanted when she married Pol, yet she continues to resist, not being able to separate the two men in her mind. Yet, when she softened a bit, Apollo instantly realized that the two Ilsa’s were completely different, and he, in turn, sets out to distance himself from her as only a KA Hero can. What a dilemma, so much emotion, funny, but at the same heartbreaking.
“Be careful what you wish for,” he whispered his eyes locked to mine as I drew in a breath. “You might get it.” He put his hand to the doorknob and finished, “And not want it”.
Apollo soon learns the error he’s made when Ilsa, now reinvented and renamed Maddy, starts to get under his skin. He sets out to win Maddy’s heart, trust, and loyalty. They both have huge obstacles to overcome, but eventually they find their way and must join forces with some powerful allies to battle the witches and others out to harm all of them.
There is so much I want to gush about in this book it makes me giddy, but I will refrain from gushing so I don’t spoil it for those who have yet to read it. I will say, however, that I love that we get more of our past favorites from Wildest Dreams, The Golden Dynasty, and Fantastical. Here’s a look at Ilsa’s first impression of the main characters from each of the preceding books when she finally gets to meet them.
Frey & Finnie (Wildest Dreams)
I looked into the smoldering shadows, through the smoke, a man and women appeared.
The man was tall built and seriously hot. The woman had fabulous white blond hair. They came to a stop ten feet away and he opened his mouth to speak, but I beat him to it. “I take it your Finnie and Frey”.
Lahn & Circe (The Golden Dynasty)
Magnificent. Bigger than the men with me, strikingly beautiful, sitting atop a magnificent steed, his hair not tied back, I knew the man who raced toward us on his magnificent beast was Dax Lahn. The mightiest warrior in this world.
Tor & Cora (Fantastical)
I pulled closer as I started paying closer attention and guided the sleigh to a stop. This I was able to do after I tore my eyes off the tall hot drink of water that was Tor the Black Prince.
In all honesty, I think this series needs to be read in order to appreciate the world KA has created, but it’s absolutely imperative that book one, Wildest Dreams, be read prior to reading Broken Dove. Not only are readers introduced to Apollo, the hero in book four, but the set-up for the parallel world is explained and makes it easier for the reader to wrap their mind around this unique backdrop.
Overall this book was more erotic in nature than the other books in the series…Apollo took “it” to new heights, and the sex and chemistry was sizzling. Once again KA wows us with one of her signature epilogs. I love this fantasy series, and cannot wait for Noc’s (Tor’s twin from our world) book!!!!
